Concealing

Concealing

(back)

‘Illusion – or rather appearance, semblance – is the theme of my life. All that is, seems, and is visible to us because we perceive it by the reflected life of semblance. Nothing else is visible.’ Gerhard Richter 1989

Concealing is a form of disruption that alters the appearance of the material.

conceal with Material

Cover the material with another to confuse and evoke something in particular to confuse the viewer into questioning what he/she is looking at.

conceal with paint

Paint may conceal with intent to confuse the identity of the material for another. For example copper paint to mislead the viewer into thinking the material is copper.

Paint may conceal with intent to reference another material only but still blur perception.

Paint/motifs/patterns may suggest another material to allude to an idea. For example, lace suggests fragility.
